Perch Dissection

Last week we dissected fish during science.  Here are all of the students in action!

Pi Day

As a math teacher we had to celebrate Pi Day on March 14th (3-14).  One of my students called his mom to bring in pie for the occasion.  A couple hours later a large bag of what looks like clothing is delivered to my room.  The secretary calls and tells me that the student is probably confused about the bag.  I turns out that that the mom called dad to bring in pies and the dad misheard her and brought in "ties" for the whole class.  So we all wore ties and ate pie for Pi Day!

New Quarter, New Decor

I've updated my bulletin boards with the beginning of the new quarter!!  We're learning about space and the phases of the moon.  I put up a new board and other space posters in my science corner.

I printed and colored the Earth to get rid of the blank space in the moon phase rotation.  I also cut out some arrows to make it complete!

Here are a couple pictures of my bulletin board outside the room for the students who have received a 100% on an assessment.

Sorry they are so blurry!!

End of the First Quarter

I can't believe the first quarter of school has come to a close.  What would be the perfect way to get ready for the rest of year.. go to California with family for Fall Break! We just got back home from San Fransisco and Sonoma.  We took a tour of San Fran on segways which was so fun! If you have the chance to ride one you need to do it.  It took me a while to get the hang of it.. after jumping ship twice and giving the locals some entertainment.  It was also Fleet Week, so while riding the segways we were also watching the sky as planes were doing amazing tricks above us.  The Blue Angels then did an air show, which was so amazing! I felt like Tom in Top Gun!

Keeneland is in full swing and I will be attending this weekend! If you've never been to Keeneland you need to put it on the top of your to do list in Sharpie! Nothing is better than Keeneland in the fall: gathering with friends and family while watching the horses race.

Back to the Classroom:

With a new quarter comes a clean grade slate; all my students have A's and I get to start new pages for grades in my grade book! (You know you're a teacher when you get excited about starting new pages in your grade book!)

We did so well last quarter and ended it with a bang! Each student was sprinkled with glitter before their end of the quarter assessments and it did the trick! They did so well and I'm a proud mama duck!

Our classroom has adopted new technology! We now have a document camera and Apple TV in addition to our SmartBoard and iPad! We are LOVING it!

We have done several labs in science and the students are already wanting to dissect!

Float or Sink Lab

We have learned so many math concepts too! Fractions, decimals, percents, and integers!

I created a new bulletin board outside of the room for students who get 100% on an assessment.  I took the idea from a friend, whose seventh graders love it.  "Slow and steady win the race!" The students get to put their name on a turtle and put it on the bulletin board.  I'm excited to get the students motivated to get their turtles in the hallway.

Soccer has also come to a close! We ended our season with a blow out and the girls had so much fun.  Getting to know the students outside of class is a great experience.

ZUMBA!!! I forgot about Zumba.  I went to Glow -n- the Dark Zumba with two other teachers from school and it was so much fun! We Zumba'd for two hours in the amphitheater by the river while wearing glow sticks.  This encouraged me to do Zumba with the kids on Friday before Fall Break.  We set up a platform and I led three songs and danced with approximately 200 students! It was a blast and the perfect way to end the quarter!

My goal is to keep my blog up to date for the remainder of the year!

What a Great Start!!

I can't believe school has been in session for over three weeks! My students are wonderful and I am loving the 6th grade.  My original plan was to write as often as possible.. it has been four weeks! I have the same students for the majority of the day and get a new bunch after lunch.  The students all come in ready to learn math and science and it is the greatest feeling.

The students made a Facebook profile for the wall outside of my classroom.  It was a great get to know you activity and kids loved it!  I had my teacher's assistants (I have four wonderful 8th grade helpers!!) up them outside of my room and my team teacher's room.

"Adding Friends to Sweet Lamb"

I have started co- coaching the middle school's girls soccer team and I am able to meet other students from school.  Another new teacher to our school is coaching with me and it's really fun!

I am also adding some additional pictures of my room before the first students arrived.  I had their planners and homework folders set out on their desks.  We were ready for the first day! I have had so much fun with my students and the other teachers at school, I am so blessed!!

The School Year is Quickly Approaching!

I have been in and out of my room during the last two weeks trying to get it ready for the kids.  After a couple trips to the parent/ teacher store, Walmart, and Michaels I have all of my supplies, at least for now.  I also took my Cricut to school to set up a craft station and got down to business! I was able to finish all of my bulletin boards, create an agenda, essential questions board, and re- arrange my desk.  I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow so I will just make this short and attach my pictures.

Bulletin Boards

I've been able to work in my classroom and my first thing on my to do list: bulletin boards!  I've officially finished all of the bulletin boards in my room (and by finish I mean a background and a boarder).  I decided that fabric was my best bet for my two large boards.  I went with a orange/ pink/ green paisley print for my biggest board.  It turned out a lot brighter after it was up so I calmed it down with a light blue scrunchie boarder.

Orange Board

My next order of business was the smaller board located at the end of my white board.  I got a pretty blue dot and put a navy scrunchie boarder around it.

The last of my bulletin board space is on the top of both of my white boards.  It is about a foot wide and very long.  I love Lilly Pulitzer patterns and I found wrapping paper, therefore I purchased enough for my two long bulletin boards (I went with Fan Dance).  After I put it all up it looked too pink so I cut a lime green boarder in half and went to town.

All of my bulletin boards are covered and have made the room look ten times better! They are finished for now, but will soon be full of math and science content.
